Sundiver

Circling the Sun, under the caverns of Mercury, Expedition Sundiver prepares for the most momentous voyage in our history. A journey into the boiling inferno of the sun, to seek our destiny in the cosmic order of life.

For in a universe in which no species can reach sentience without being 'uplifted' by a patron race, it seems that only mankind has reached for the stars unaided. And now, the greatest mystery of all may be explained...

There was some stuff in the setting of this book that was very interesting. I especially liked the idea of the lineages of uplifted species and the politics around that. However, the plot felt like a murder mystery by the numbers and some of the other ideas, especially around Earth's society of the future, felt a bit crammed in.

This is a dull book but has some interesting concepts. I have been persuaded that the sequels are better and will read them to find out more.
